What "Test-Optional" College Applications Really Imply

In addition to transcripts and test scores, the most noteworthy element of college applications has traditionally been the essay. However, modified test-optional admission policies, especially those implemented during Covid - and likely for the long run - have shifted the spotlight onto other elements of students’ applications.

This implies additional scrutiny on other elements of the application - like grades, activities, and interest - implying that it is never too soon to begin planning, regardless of the age of your student. Colleges are looking for new ways for students to demonstrate their interest as candidates. It’s never too late to do so!

What to know in 9th grade and not when it’s too late

Freshman and sophomore grades

  • Support students during the stark academic transition from middle school to high school

  • This promotes students’ potential and preemptively alleviates pressure during more intense upperclass course loads

  • 10th grade is critical; students have found their groove yet are not involved in the college process. Focus on the academics of this lighter year

Course load

  • Consider the trade-off between As in regular classes and Bs in advanced classes

  • Pursuing a more demanding course load demonstrates students’ interest in a challenge

Résumé building

  • Consider partaking in activities that evoke passion and are linked with a common theme

  • Are these activities cohesive? What story do they tell about the student?

Leadership roles

  • Start a club or apply for school or community opportunities, even as underclassmen

What it’s never too late to know

Focus on grades

  • They are always important and demonstrate growth

  • Improvements are an opportunity to discuss progress and personal development

Activities

  • Covid may have resulted in lighter résumés

  • Instead of feeling defeated, discuss personal projects, experiences, and their impact

Engagement

  • Colleges and universities look for students who engage with them, even online

  • Sign up for newsletters, join virtual tours, open emails, engage in zoom presentations

Time Management and organization

  • Skills fundamental to any and all individuals

  • Evolve and adapt to current responsibilities, for now and the future
