Summer Checklist for Rising Seniors

Senior year once seemed so far away, but now it is time. Rising high school seniors are thrilled they have made it. Yet, before the fun (and intense fall semester) begins, ALB Tutoring recommends students tackle their college application to-dos over the summer.

During the spring of junior year, most students have already 1) developed a realistic, evolving college list about which they feel excited and 2) asked teachers for recommendations. This leaves room for the following tasks during the summer, leading up to August 1st when applications (like the Common App and Coalition for College) go live.

ALB Tutoring’s summer goal is for students to be 100% complete with their college essay by August 1st in order to be able to focus on supplemental essays and materials in the fall.

ALB Tutoring's college application timeline

June-July: After a end-of-year respite, begin college essay topic brainstorm and development

July-August: Draft, edit, polish college essay. Build and revise résumé

August 1: Applications go live! Fill in demographic information, note individual supplemental essays

August-school: Develop as many supplemental essays as possible

By October 15: Complete and submit applications

By proceeding in this structured manner, students take advantage of their more flexible summer schedules in order to tackle the most challenging elements of the application before school starts. This takes some of the pressure off, especially since senior year course loads and extracurricular activities are the most demanding, and helps students build confidence since they will have already accomplished a lot before returning to the classroom.
