The Importance of College Essays

College essays can be one of the most stress-inducing components of the college application. Yes, they carry a lot of weight and require time and intention to craft. However, ALB Tutoring considers the college essay to be more of an exciting opportunity than a burden!

The application essay that gets sent to every school is an opportunity for students to:

  • Share their voice with admission officers

  • Illustrate a topic not discussed in the application

  • Create an emotional and intellectual connection with admission officers

  • Develop and communicate their unique writing style

  • Demonstrate, to themselves (!), the writing abilities they have worked on throughout the past decade!

Imagine being an admissions officer who reads piles upon piles of applications from October to March; student profiles morph together. It becomes challenging to distinguish one applicant from another. That is until they feel a connection and read - rather than skim - an essay that sparks their interest. The student captures the reader and his or her application stands out. Perhaps the admissions officer had a similar experience, shares a common interest, or admires the student’s courage or creativity. Elements like these make the essay memorable: the key to standing out from other applications.

Now, the challenging part is to pen an essay that achieves this. Each student deserves to submit an essay he or she feels reflects his or her best work and level of development as high school seniors. In fact, this is ALB Tutoring’s specialty: helping students brainstorm, outline, craft, and edit distinct essays they are proud of upon submission. Plus, a creative essay serves as a conversation stater with new classmates during college orientation!
