How to Best Start the New School Year

After almost two years of living in a pandemic, students are used to oscillating between the modalities of distance, hybrid, and in-school learning. When parents wonder how best to prepare and guide their student through these erratic motions of academic life, ALB Tutoring suggests they support their student by implementing strategies that will boost confidence and preparedness.

Help your child start the year with confidence:

Make to-do lists when feeling overwhelmed

  • Visually seeing what needs to be done mitigates the daunting overwhelm

  • Establish a study area

    • A quiet, happy area that can be personalized with pictures and desk accessories to promote focus and concentration

  • Organize school supplies

    • Plan a trip to Staples

    • Each subject should be assigned a color. Use that color of all class-specific supplies (binder, folder)

    • Use binders for classes with a lot of handouts: science, history, English

    • Buy a PLANNER!

  • Routinely make and revise goals with your student

    • Not striving for perfection, but implementing realistic objectives whose achievement will boost confidence

  • Have your child prepare backpack, after school supplies, and outfit/uniform the night before

    • This will jumpstart the day in an organized fashion, avoiding a last-minute stressful rush

It is important to remember that school is just a component of the student’s life. If there are issues in the other areas, there will be issues in academics.

As the past two years have demonstrated, these times require pivots and quick decision making. These are all elements fundamental to children and adolescents’ development. So, while it may be stressful and difficult to plan ahead, preparing will ensure smoother adjustments and moods.
