What is Homework Therapy?
ALB Tutoring helps students create lasting change
ALB Tutoring’s homework therapy, which uses a combination of psychological and didactic tools, helps students, first and foremost, uncover self-confidence. How do you function when you lack self-esteem? Exactly. Now imagine a teenager.
When students’ self-confidence increases, their overall wellbeing, academics, test scores, and functioning improve. These issues are intrinsically connected; in fact, academics are one piece of the puzzle that is life: home life, social life, emotional life, physical life, school life. If there is an issue in one area, others, like academics and self-esteem, suffer. ALB Tutoring helps students rediscover self-esteem, kickstarting an improvement in the functioning of other interconnected realms of life.

Human strengths and weaknesses contribute to the diversity of life. This also applies to learning types; we all learn differently. Some of us are verbal or visual learners while others like being in physical contact with what they’re learning (kinesthetic learners) or listening to music while studying (auditory learners). When students are taught how to function in a way that best suits their unique cognitive abilities, they perform better. For example, if you were being taught a math lesson in Korean (provided that you were not familiar with the language), wouldn’t you struggle more than during the same lesson in English? This scenario happens frequently in the classroom. It is unlikely that teachers deliver lessons via modalities that suit various learning styles. So, visual learners struggle when a teacher verbally lectures a class. Classroom lessons may also be taught at a quicker-than-ideal pace for certain types of learners who require more time to process and integrate new information. While neither of these situations is meant to penalize students, it inadvertently does: visual and slower learners fall behind in class, begin to perform poorly on assignments, and become frustrated when studying for assessments. This domino-effect results in lower grades, decreased self-esteem, and waning motivation. We’d also feel frustrated if we were trying to learn but didn’t know how to help ourselves… or even that we could! Indeed, students learn to help themselves with the support of ALB Tutoring.
Homework therapists “help solve math problems and emotional ones” (The New York Times). In fact, ALB Tutoring functions more like a psychologist - who develops an alliance with patients, helping them grow as individuals - rather than a tutor who meets with students to prepare for a physics test. Homework therapy teaches students how to help themselves with strategies that suit their unique learning styles so that, soon, they will be able to prepare for physics tests on their own.
How?
With ALB Tutoring, students learn new ways of organizing and understanding information - on paper and, subsequently, in their minds - that capitalize on individual learning styles. Students learn via empirically-proven psychological strategies, like scaffolding (read more about it here), to create ad-hoc learning strategies, implement study plans and routines, and understand how to manage stress and responsibilities. Hybrid psychological and didactic tools help students create lasting change.
These skills are critical not only for school-age children and young adults; they are also fundamental for adult confidence and success. In fact, pre-teen, teenage, and young-adult years are fundamental for development; during these periods, constructive habits can be engrained in the mind and body. So, it is important that students learn how to plan their academic, extracurricular, and personal responsibilities now so they will be successful in planning and managing their college responsibilities and, one day, professional endeavors.
Once students realize they can achieve, they are motivated for more! How much does this boost their morale and change their course towards the future?!
Confident students are happy students. They are also more resilient, open, creative, and attentive. ALB Tutoring is here to help your student not just cope, but thrive too.
